What is the Citizenship Amendment Bill(CAB)?

Under the Citizenship Amendment Bill, the provision to grant citizenship of India to citizens from certain countries has been relaxed. Let's know everything about this bill -

- Under the Citizenship Amendment Bill, citizenship of India will be granted to the minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

- Under this bill, there is a provision to relax the rules for granting citizenship of India to the refugees of Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Parsi and Christian communities.

- These minorities will get citizenship in the same situation if any minority is being harassed on religious grounds in these three countries. If the premise is not religious, it will not fall within the purview of this citizenship law.

- People of Muslim religion will not be granted citizenship under this law, because in all these three countries Muslims are not a minority but are in the majority. The Modi government's reasoning behind excluding Muslims is that due to the plurality of Muslims in these three countries, there can be no persecution of any Muslim on religious grounds.

- Under this bill, a minority is required to live in India for at least 6 to get citizenship of India. Under the old law (Citizenship Act 1955), Indian citizenship was required to remain in India for at least 11 years.

- Under the Citizenship Amendment Act, there is a provision to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who come to India before December 31, 2014 from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan.

What is a National Register of Citizens(NRC)?

Just as people are protesting against the citizenship amendment law all over the country right now, the same was happening during the implementation of the National Register of Citizens. In protest, most people relied on the words of others and raised flags in their hands and many times even to stone. Let us once again understand what the National Register of Citizens is, the NRC, which is being raised with the CAB raising the tone of protest.

- The NRC shows who is a citizen of India and who is not. Those who are not involved and are living in the country are considered illegal citizens.

- Under Assam NRC, those people are considered citizens of India who have been living in Assam since March 25, 1971. Those who have been living in Assam since then or who do not have proof of living in Assam before March 25, 1971 have been excluded from the NRC list.

- The main purpose of implementing the NRC is to identify illegal citizens and either send them back or they can be validated by giving them citizenship of India.

- The NRC was needed because during 1971 many people from Bangladesh had crossed the Indian border. These people mostly entered Assam and West Bengal. In such a case, it becomes necessary to identify the intruders who have been identified and expelled.

Difference Between CAB and NRC

There have been various debates since the introduction of the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Some people are saying that this is the reverse of the NRC, so people like Mamata Banerjee are saying that it has been brought so that it can be easier to implement NRC, both are two sides of the same coin. Now the question is, what is the difference between the two and what is the whole point about it?

- Citizenship Amendment law has the provision of granting Indian citizenship to a foreign citizen, while the purpose of the NRC is to identify people who are not citizens of India, but who are living in India.

- The CAB has relaxed the rules for granting citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis who came to India before December 31, 2014. However, under the NRC, there is a provision for granting citizenship of India to those living in India before 25th March 1971.

NRC protests in the name of CAB!

Even though people have taken to the streets to protest the citizenship amendment law, they are actually protesting the NRC. Rather, let's say that these two are interconnected. People protesting are saying why Muslims are not included in citizenship amendment law? He alleged that this government wants to take away the citizenship of Muslims. It is being said that the Modi government will grant citizenship to Hindus and people of other faiths outside the NRC under the citizenship amendment law, while excluding the Muslims involved.
